No matter how often I do these long runs, and especially races, getting up at an ungawdly hour on Saturday morning is never easy. That morning’s wake up call came to me at 3:40AM. I even went to bed at 7 PM on Friday night because well, for one, I was tired, and second, I knew I had to get up super early.
Mentally and physically I felt great going into this run. I taped up both my little pinky toes just to be on the safe side, and was ready to get these miles done.
I could tell there was a drop in attendance due to several races going on this weekend – Chicago, Portland, Long Beach, and Ironman Kona. Exciting events!!
Waking up early for a run is difficult, but I absolutely love this part when we get greeted by the sun. It kinda makes up for the lost sleep. Almost. 🙂
For the next 3 miles, I talked to this really nice lady who for the most part made me forget about my toe. It’s easier to forget about discomfort when you’ve some good conversation going on to act as a little distraction. After finishing the 10 miles, I took off to run another two, but my toe was giving me serious attitude and didn’t want me to finish. In the end, I was slightly short of my 12 miles and finished with 11.11 miles for the day in 2:12:09.Turns out I had the formation of a blister. UGH!! Nobody, especially runners, wants a blister. The taping I did as a preventative measure did nothing. But, now I know I need to do more than just a little taping and Body Glide. I talked to Mike after the run and he offered me a couple of different solutions that might help. If I have any toe problems during RnR LA, then I’m just going to do my best to ignore them, just like I did with the Garmin that kept going off. 🙂
