memorial day fun

Posted on May 28, 2012June 13, 2015 by arunningmess

Happy Memorial Day! This day really isn’t just about a day off from work or school, or firing
up the BBQ for some hot grilled veggies, or lounging around all day doing
absolutely nothing, it’s about remembering those who have served our country. Today I took a moment to appreciate that and to give thanks to all those brave soldiers who have given their lives so that the rest of us can enjoy our freedom.

Initially my plan was to hit the gym for a strength training and stretching session since I didn’t want to run again after yesterday’s 6 miler. I haven’t run 6 miles in forever
and it definitely felt good to inch towards the higher mileage. I really didn’t
think I was going to have 6 miles in me after such an exhausting week, where I
just had no energy to do much of anything…but I did. Yay!
This morning I ended up skipping the gym and instead, met up with my great friend Patricia and her girls, Lucy and Ethel. We went for a walk and really had no idea we were going to end up tackling 5 miles!!  Good thing I had my Garmin with me or else by the way we felt, we would have thought we walked a good 10 miles…in the heat.

It got quite warm and we weren’t smart enough to take water with us. Well in our defense I will say we didn’t think we were going to be out there that long. We just kept going and going, talking about life that we paid very little attention to how far we were actually going. Luckily, there was some shade to help us and after we did some running, we took a break at a nearby park.
Ethel cooling down at the park.
Lucy chillaxing.

It ended up being much warmer than we anticipated but we still had a couple of miles remaining to get back home. Poor Lucy and Ethel who were slowly reaching the dehydration mark. We stopped by a nearby McDonald’s for a much needed water break. That was probably the first time in over 14 years I actually went to a McDonald’s! But hey, you gotta do whatcha gotta do and the girls were way better after they got some cool, refreshing water in them. I know I was.

During our walk, I saw this sign:

Amen

I’ll admit I did look to see if they picked up all their dog’s poop. I didn’t see any so the sign must’ve worked.

After we got back, Patricia and I decided we needed to refuel and so we went to a bakery to pick up some goodies, but turns out the bakery was closed. Darn it! Since we were in the area, we went to a Rite Aid to browse when I saw this lovely gem: A singing Justin Bieber toothbrush!! Really?!?!
Why you not smiling Bieber? Your teeth not clean??
Belieb me, I was not tempted to buy it. However, I was tempted to buy this:

Since our first choice bakery was not open, luckily, we had a second choice available at Yummy Cupcakes! At first I had no idea what to get. I was aiming for the Red Velvet but then I saw the Vegan Chocolate with Vanilla frosting and it just called out to me, and it was delicious!!! I’m sold. You have me Yummy Cupcakes! You have me!

Our next stop was clothing shopping where I just had to pick up some new jeans. You like?

Oh alright, those aren’t really my jeans, but aren’t they snazzy? Some wild and crazy dogs will have a fun time chewing on them.

Before our Memorial Day Walking/Cupcake Indulging/Shopping excursion was over, Patricia and I relaxed poolside for a bit. We didn’t actually jump in, but we could have easily done so since it was hot and that cold water was quite inviting. Maybe next time though. Oh yeah, I’ll be ready next time. 🙂

I’m coming for you!
