first long trail run

Posted on July 14, 2012June 13, 2015 by arunningmess

Whoa! I seriously can’t believe we’re in the middle of July already. I
honestly don’t know where June went, but wherever it went, I sure hope it had a good time.  I guess my goal of writing more didn’t
quite happen. Whups. I’ll work on that.

Well I am just finishing the 6th week of training and so far
it’s been going somewhat well.  My midweek training has been a little inconsistent so I need to get back on track. This coming week I will. I guess I’ll be working on that too. 🙂

A couple of weeks ago, I finally got my new shoes so I could feel more confident running on a trail. It’s actually been a really long time since I got fitted for running shoes and turns out
I’m not as neutral as I once was. My feet are actually overpronating! I couldn’t believe it. I tried on a few and based on sheer comfort and fit, I went with these Brooks. Okay I have to be honest, the color of these shoes had me sold. They reminded me of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream so I just had to go with them. I made sure to take a photo of them when they were brand sparkling new because they weren’t going to stay that way for long.

The real deal.

Being fitted for new running shoes (my very first pair of trail running shoes!) was just what I needed for my first long run on a trail. Early last Saturday I headed over to Sullivan Canyon with my sister and dear friend Patricia, and I was super excited all week about it, yet, I was still super nervous. I’ve never run more than a few miles on a trail, but that wasn’t my biggest worry. What if I came across a bear, a snake, or a bobcat?!

Any bobcats in there?

The good news is I didn’t, but I sure did hear a lot of scampering and rustling in the trees. I think all those little sounds made me want to just keep running. At times I would slow down to a walk, and then I would hear something. Well that something was my cue to bolt.

My goal was to accomplish around 8 miles so I knew I would turn around at mile 4. Just around 3.5 miles in, the gradual incline turned into a little more steepness so I walked another half mile before turning around. I’ve never done this trail before and when I reached the junction to go either left or right, I didn’t know which way to go. I could see making a left was going to take me to an even steeper incline, so I chose to go right. I didn’t run too far in before it was time for me to make my way back. Shortly after turning around, I could hear a biker coming my way. This trail is quite popular amongst mountain bikers and here was this guy riding a unicycle!

Wait, can I get a lift back?
The trail itself was good. I don’t think it will be reminiscent of the Bulldog course too much (of course I’ll find out during next week’s training run) because there are a lot of rocks for the first 3 miles or so. But thanks to “Mint and Chip” I felt like I was running on clowns clouds. Somewhere around the 3 to 3.5 mile mark, the path got a little more smooth. I also don’t think the Bulldog course will have much shade covering and this trail certain does.
So what did I really learn from my first long trail run? Well, I learned you can’t really space out. I tend to let my mind wander at times…next thing I know, I’m having to stop myself from eating gravel because my newly discovered overpronating feet snipped a big rock that I didn’t see. Oh yeah, that’s another thing I learned – you gotta look a couple of feet a head of you and not waaay ahead in the distance. In between singing “Some Nights” by Fun. (couldn’t get this song out of my head), I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention! I also learned that song gave me a nice little running cadence and I finished the 8 miles in about 1:50 which made me happy.
Happy new trail runner!
Just before I got back to the trailhead, I ran into my sis and Patricia who stopped during their hike to chat with a woman and her adorable dogs. I stopped for a millisecond before Patricia yelled at me, “you gotta keep running!” And so I did.
When I got back to the car, I inspected the aftermath on my shoes. Not so brand sparkling new anymore, but that’s ok. It was super worth it.
