September is officially over, and with it, I have officially survived a whole year without cable or television. Yes! It can be done! Last September the cable came off, and in it’s replacement, Netflix and Hulu came on. Truth is I didn’t really miss the cable. I didn’t really watch that many programs to begin with. Sure it was a nice entertaining distraction, and maybe it was fun mindlessly flipping through the channels at times hoping I’d land on something good to provide me the distraction and make me procrastinate from whatever I needed to do, like going for a run. But, the cable had to go.
In the past year, I know I’ve missed out on seeing all those big one-time entertainment specials: Academy Awards, Super Bowl, Grammys, World Series, The Kardashians Take Manhattan*, and recently, The Emmy’s but that didn’t matter because I was boycotting it anyway since Sons of Anarchy wasn’t nominated. At least I didn’t miss the final Late Show with David Letterman. Thanks cbs.com.
For the most part, I don’t feel I’ve missed much, and it’s kinda nice not knowing what the hell people are talking about.
Did you see so and so perform?
Nope.
Oh my God, did you see last night’s “Empire?”
Nope.
Do you ever watch (insert some reality show here)?
Nope.
That game was so good!
Didn’t see it.
If there was anything news worthy, and if I really wanted to know, all I had to do was Google it and up popped a hundred stories on it.
Of course, it’s not like I was completely shut out of the world. All my local news stations have live feeds and I’d sometimes watch them in the morning or evening. However, if I didn’t feel like hearing the sad and depressing stories, I’d hit up YouTube, Neflix, or Hulu for something funny.
A lot of times The Tonight Show is the go-to, and lately, it’s been Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Another new favorite is Blackish.
Now don’t get me wrong, I still watch plenty of tv via the Hulu or whatever network a show is on. With the new season starting up again, I’m getting back into the groove of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., The Walking Dead, and a little Hawaii 5-O. They’re all available online. Ooh, and I can’t forget about Fear the Walking Dead and the one I caught this week, Scream Queens. That show is campy and fun! And, maybe just a tad nerve-racking and scary.
Netflix was a huge save this past year! I got locked in with:
Sons of Anarchy
Gilmore Girls (Yay!)
Miami Vice (until it was sadly removed. Boooo Netflix)
Portlandia
Breaking Bad
Grey’s Anatomy (stopped watching when it was on tv after the second season. Oh, it’s still on? Really??)
Daredevil (the original show, not the Ben Affleck movie)
Narcos
And not to mention the countless movies and documentaries I watched.
One of them being Desert Runners. If you have not watched this documentary running film, it’s amazing! I’ve actually watched it a few times.
I wish I could say less tv actually increased my running, but no, I don’t think it did. But I do think it increased my nap time and sleep and that is always a good thing.
Yes, September is officially over and the cable doesn’t look like it’s coming back anytime soon. I’ve already lasted a whole year. I think I can last another.
Thanks for reading and Happy…well Happy!
*The Kardashians Take Manhattan is NOT a real show. At least I don’t think it is, but I don’t have tv so it very well could be.
Amazing how something we once thought was a necessity becomes actually worthless in your life. I’ve been wanting to shut ours off too, but can’t quite get full team support of that decision. And I loved Desert Runners too. But let’s not discuss that…I know how you are. 😘
Ha ha!! You do know how I am. 🙂
