Prior to Friday, I hadn’t fully settled on the song I was going to select for today’s Music Monday post. But, later that day something happened in Paris (actually many things happened in Paris) and my heart was broken.
Back in April of this year, my family and I traveled to Paris where my sister and I ran the marathon together. Other than a few photos I shared, I never wrote about it. Nope. I didn’t even write a race recap for my one, and so far only, international race.
But, I’ll share this.
When we were around 13 or 14 Km (8 to 9 miles) into the race, we hit a long stretch of road that went on and on. At this time, it was very quiet around us and I could tell it was beginning to wear on my sister. The mental aspect kicked in early.
I didn’t plan to listen to music, but I had my phone with me so I decided to play one song to hopefully inspire and help take hers, okay our minds, off this long stretch. The song was “Afterlife” by Ingrid Michaelson. Even though we only listened to it once, it was the only song I played during the entire race. The lyrics themselves always strike a chord with me (pun intended) and it’s one of my favorites.
If there’s any takeaway from this song, it’s this: When the world is breaking down around you taking everything that you know, and none of it makes any sense…
We are going to be alright
As difficult as that might seem whether it’s in running or life in general, we must believe that.
Enjoy!
