I’ve been feeling a bit antsy as of late. The reason being, Los Angeles has been having some pretty amazing weather lately. The month of May was full of foggy overcast skies and cool weather with temperatures barely reaching 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If the sun finally does comes out, it doesn’t show up until much later in the afternoon and a few hours before it’s about to set. This so-lovingly called “May Grey” is now going to give way to “June Gloom.” And as you can probably guess, there’s a possibility it’ll be more of the same.
For the most part I’ve loved this weather. In fact, I live for this weather!! It’s perfect nap weather and yes, that can be a problem when there are things I need to do and all I want to do is snuggle down and catch some zzz’s. It’s all-around perfect!
It’s also not conducive to training for a 100 mile race where temperatures could reach the 90s and 100s. I mean, c’mon Los Angeles, where’s the heat???
Asking that question is SO not like me, and I know there are people who don’t want me to be wishing the heat to be here already. Honestly I don’t thrive in heat. Certainly there are a few people who do. And we all know heat can be miserable and dangerous. But for once, I’m actually looking forward to it. Okay I may be regretting that statement later. Seriously regretting it.
So what am I to do until then?
For starters, I’ve been wearing long-sleeved shirts when I’m out running. I figured this would slowly ease me into the heat training once it finally hits. There are a few instances when I don’t, but for the most part, I’ve got my long-sleeved shirts ready to go especially if it’s a longer run — just as I did during Sunday’s run with my friend, and friend of the Ultra Ordinary Running podcast, Jim “Episode 9” Doyle! We were joined by a couple of other runners as well whom I met that morning.
And of course, you can’t even see much of the long-sleeves in my photo, but they’re there. Even Doyle went with the L.S. as well. But he’s an odd one. I kid.
A part of me is thinking if the heat doesn’t pick up a little more soon, I’ll be throwing the gloves on too. Note to self: find gloves.
Sometimes I try to run a little later in the day, but that’s doesn’t seem to make much of a difference since it’s still in the 60s.
The one thing I can do, and probably the most important, is to simply enjoy what the weather gives me now, and to have sweet precious patience, because the high temperature heat is going to show up soon enough. And when it does, there will be no letting up and I’ll be thinking back fondly…Remember when it was May and it was a chilly 65 degrees? Good times.
Until next time…Thank you for reading!
