18.00 miles
I did it! I made it through 18 miles in the scorching heat! It was muggy hot but I got these miles done and I’m so happy!
When I got out at 6:30 AM, the temperature was already 81F. It wouldn’t have made much difference if I started any earlier since it was already 77F when I woke up at 4:30 AM.
When I reached mile 11 I felt a bit nauseous with the heat getting to me so I slowed down to walk more and drink more water after feeling I was already drinking enough. Apparently not. I’m out of hot weather practice, and I was never really good at it before so I shouldn’t be surprised.
I felt better after drinking more, and taking advantage of the ice I brought to place in my bandana to help keep me cool imagining I was training for Javelina Jundred again and pleased that I wasn’t.
I finished in time to catch the last half of the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert which was beautiful and emotional and I wish it weren’t happening because he was such a pivotal force in the Foo Fighters, and he’s gone. When I started to feel nauseous, I thought perhaps it was a sign to call it and go home to watch the entire concert but I knew I wasn’t at that point just yet.
There were fewer people outside running and walking and it’s understandable. What’s interesting is I was set to run a 6-hour race today, but it was canceled in July. Had it been held, I would’ve been starting around 8:30 AM when the heat began to surge.
I know some people thrive in the heat and love exercising in it, but I am not one. All I can do is prepare for Chicago in case this weather follows me out there in 5 weeks but I sure hope race day weather is fantastic, as in a high of 60 degrees, slight breeze, and overcast. I can hope, right?
Thank you for reading my daily post on my Chicago Marathon training.
