when insomnia created me a facebook page

Posted on January 29, 2016March 11, 2016 by arunningmess

So my plan to resume training on Wednesday morning didn’t quite pan out as I had hoped because apparently somebody decided Tuesday night was the most opportune time to blast insanely loud thrashing death metal music outside my window. Now, I could go on and blame this person for waking me up, causing me to have mild insomnia afterwards. Of course, it was just enough to disrupt my sleep and in the process, make me grab hold of as much sleep as I could before getting up for work, but you know what? I’m not.

Truth be told, deep down I knew I’d be pushing it. But isn’t that what ultrarunners do, we push it? Push it real good…Thanks Salt-N-Pepa!

It was really my head telling me to give it another day, and the death metal thrasher was just the messenger…even if I couldn’t understand one word of it.

When my second attempt at running on Thursday morning didn’t pan out either, I surrendered to the idea of waiting until the weekend. What’s a couple more days, right?

As I was adding up my mileage for January, turns out I need to run 3.28 miles in order to reach 100 for the month! Whoa!! Okay, I should say I’m not a real stickler for numbers but last January, I was able to hit 106 for the month and I kinda want to beat that — so much for not being a stickler for numbers. It was then I said to myself, “Enough is enough! I’ve had it with these sniffles! Tomorrow I’m running. Oh yeah, the gloves are off!”

Thursday night I made sure my running clothes were ready, again, and then went to bed; prepared to sleep the night away until my alarm went off.

This time I didn’t need any death metal music to wake me up or keep me awake, I had insomnia all on my own. Minute by minute. Hour by hour. Slowly I saw “sleeping the night away” drift away from me. Was it the espresso shot I had at 2pm? Nah! Eh, it’s possible. Well, there was no point in fighting it because my eyes were wide awake.

The next thing I know, I find myself creating a Facebook Page for A Running Mess! And that was what insomnia created for me!

I’ve always believed things happen for a reason so maybe insomnia was a blessing in disguise. It made me stay awake and I ended up creating something I didn’t really think about creating before. To be honest, it never entered my mind but somehow last night it did. Sure I’ve had many things floating around my head lately but creating A Running Mess page on The Facebook wasn’t one of them. Alright, maybe I would’ve created it eventually. Kind of excited about this! I love trying new things and sprucing things up a bit.

Eventually I fell asleep. Of course, the last time I checked the clock it was 12:36AM…and then I woke up without an alarm clock at 3:10AM and didn’t go back to sleep. Again, there was no point in fighting it. So I got up, put on those running clothes, laced up the shoes, and made my way out the door. I was at the gym by 4AM to hit the treadmill and logged 3.42 slow running miles.

When you haven’t run in 13 days and desperately can’t wait until this cold eased up to start running again, yeah, I’ll take any miles no matter how slow they were! Plus, I officially hit 100 miles for the January and enjoyed listening to the new episode of the Ultra Ordinary Running Podcast while running them! We discuss Post Race Blues. It’s a good one!
